Wrath Isn't the Answer
By Jean Eunjin Lee
Adolescence is the toughest stage in life. One doesn’t know why he or she does or acts differently. A gentle person might suddenly turn into an ill-tempered scoundrel. One might be mad at himself/herself without any reason. However, what good is it when one expresses wrath for something that has already occurred? Recall that wrath is just an emotion, not a solution to a problem.
April had been a consistent student since she entered secondary school. She did her best in whatever task was given to her and was rarely hindered by the challenges that were thrust upon her. As time progressed, the difficulty of her academics got increased causing an excessive amount of stress. She came back from school one day and her usual bright face wasn’t present. Her body was tense as hot tears filled her eyes. She expressed extreme anger and disappointment in herself. She came to a point where she was blabbering nonsense to people around her, making them feel frustrated and confused as well. April had gotten a ‘C’ on her test. She knew she felt uncomfortable with the materials covered on test, but she didn’t expect solid, cold ‘C’ on her test. It was indeed so unexpected that she couldn’t control the anger coming out of her. Then, her mother came up to her and said, “What happened happened. It’s past now. As long as you learned something from your mistake there’s no need for wrath. Your anger will do nothing but place a scar on your heart.”
April remained silent as she thought about what her mother had said to her, she figured her mother’s words were true. There was no need for her to be angry. April felt guilty for being angry at people and blaming them for her mistakes. She noticed the burden she had placed on other’s shoulders and she felt terrible about her immature reaction. At that moment, she realized wrath wasn’t the answer to her problem.
